Doubling up

The fat under your chin is called submental fat, and it develops for several reasons. The first, and this is one over which you have little control, is genetics. The simple fact is that your body is made up of the same genes that are in your parents’ bodies, and their parents before them. If you have a family history of smaller chins and a propensity to develop double chins, you’re at the mercy of these genes, no matter how many exercises you do or pounds you lose.

The second contributing factor to a double chin is something that is within your control — your weight. If you’re carrying more weight than you should, your body stashes the extra fat around your body and the area under your chin may be one of those locations.

Rounding out the double-chin culprits is age. As you grow older, your skin naturally loses collagen and elastin, which are the proteins responsible for the tone and elasticity of your chin. As a result, your skin doesn’t hold as firmly to your neck and begins to sag. Gravity then takes over, and fat can gather in this area. Like genetics, you have little control over this process.

The Kybella solution

Until recently, the only answer for the double chin was surgery, which carries with it some risk and downtime. But there’s a new nonsurgical kid on the block — Kybella — which was approved by the FDA to “improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat).”

Kybella is an injectable that relies on synthetic deoxycholic acid to get rid of your double chin. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule already found in your body that helps it break down and absorb dietary fat. With the synthetic acid, Kybella mimics this process and destroys the fat under your chin. And here’s the best news: When we target the fat cells under your chin, your body doesn’t regenerate new ones to take their place.

The Kybella process

When you first come in, we’ll sit down with you to review the extent of your double chin and come up with an appropriate treatment plan. Most of our patients need four to six treatments, and we do one treatment a month. We space the treatments out to allow time for Kybella to go to work and destroy the fat cells.

Each treatment takes about 20 minutes, and we administer several injections during each treatment session. We supply you with a topical numbing cream for your comfort, and you’re free to return to your normal activities directly afterward.

Your results will reveal themselves gradually over the course of your treatments. A few weeks after your final treatment, you’ll have your final results, which are yours to maintain.
