No one is safe

Before we get into how and why cellulite forms, let’s first dispel one of the most commonly held beliefs about cellulite: It only strikes people who have extra fat. This statement is patently false for several reasons.

First, cellulite is a condition that’s created when your fat presses up through the connective fibers in your skin that hold your skin to your muscles. It doesn’t matter what body shape you are, if the structures beneath the surface of your skin allow fat, even the smallest amounts, to pop through to the surface, you’re left with cellulite.

Because of this, both heavy and skinny people can develop cellulite if the structural conditions allow it. This means that you can’t diet away cellulite or work it off on the treadmill. That said, if you’re carrying more weight that can push through, your cellulite may become more pronounced. So, we do encourage you to continue your weight loss efforts to reduce your cellulite.

Though cellulite seems to develop in people without rhyme or reason, there are several factors that put you more at risk, namely gender.

It’s a woman’s world

The fiber network that connects your skin to your muscles, with your fat in between, is different depending upon your sex. Women have more of a criss-cross pattern, while men have fibers that run closer together, side-by-side. It’s for this reason that 90% of cellulite afflicts women, while men only account for 10%.

What’s a woman to do?

Now that the reason behind cellulite is clearly defined, it still doesn’t help when you’re trying to figure out what to do about it. We have the answer. After much research, we’ve chosen to offer our patients the VelaShape III system, which tackles cellulite from several angles using three different energies: radiofrequency (RF), optical, and vacuum.

The unit isolates your target areas through a vacuum mechanism, which pulls your skin into the handpiece. From there, we deliver bipolar RF and optical energies to both your dermis and hypodermis zones, meaning your skin and the fat below. This energy is converted into heat inside your fat cells, which destroys them, at which time your body takes over and flushes them out through your lymphatic system.

The energy also creates a mild healing response in your skin, which includes increased collagen and elastin production, so your skin regenerates and reforms over your new shape nicely. The end result is that you have fewer lumps of fat and a new contour, complete with smoother-looking skin.

No time flat

Each VelaShape III session takes mere minutes, and most of our patients need one to three visits to get the results they want. Since the procedure is noninvasive, you’re free to go about your day immediately afterward.

You do need to wait for several weeks to achieve your final look as your body works to clear away the dead fat cells and recontour itself. Typically, you should count on six to 12 weeks for optimal results.

If your cellulite starts to make an unwelcome reappearance, you can simply come back in for a touch-up treatment.

If you want smoother-looking skin, free of the peaks and valleys of cellulite, give us a call, or use the online scheduling tool to book an appointment.
