How does BOTOX work?
After a consultation with a member of our team, we will let you know if you're a good candidate for cosmetic injections, such as BOTOX. This quick outpatient procedure can take as little as 5 – 10 minutes, leaving you with smoother skin that only improves over time.
BOTOX is a purified form of botulism toxin type A that works by blocking signals to the facial muscles that cause what we call "dynamic wrinkles." These are the wrinkles you see when you move your face (such as the horizontal lines you see when your raise your eyebrows or the "11s" between your brows when you furrow them).
The more we smile, squint, frown, etc., the more those dynamic wrinkles cause long-lasting creases on our face (which lead to static wrinkles, which stick around even at rest). Preventing your face from making the muscle contractions that create those lines gives your skin a chance to relax and smooth out some of those wrinkles as well.
What four things should I avoid after getting BOTOX?
While you can leave the office and get back to your daily routine right after BOTOX injections, there are some things you should avoid right after getting BOTOX to help achieve the best results.
Things to avoid after BOTOX include:
-
Laying down in the three hours after injections
-
Rubbing or massaging your face for the next 24 hours
-
Anything that makes you sweat (such as vigorous exercise, saunas, hot tubs, or tanning booths) in the 24 hours after treatment
-
Alcohol use and direct sunlight for 48 hours after treatment
All of these actions can cause bruising and swelling that delay seeing the results of your BOTOX injections. In some cases, laying on your face (or sleeping on your face in the immediate days following treatment) can give you undesired aesthetic results.
We will give you specific aftercare instructions and answer any questions you have at the time of your appointment.
